The Alberta Guide to Education (2010) states, “Schools have the responsibility of creating and nurturing a learning environment for students that supports the development of a lifelong habit of daily physical activity and forming healthy lifestyles” (Alberta Education, p. 31).
To effectively instill lifelong healthy living habits within the school community, Cardston Elementary has embedded the model of comprehensive school health (CSH) within its wellness education and health initiatives. Comprehensive school health involves the entire school community and outside agencies. It supports “… students in achieving their full potential – social and physical environment, teaching and learning, healthy school policy and partnerships and services” (Alberta Education, p. 1).
Collaborative efforts with major stakeholders and cross-ministry services on effective ways to promote healthy eating, active living and a positive social environment are well established. Healthy Students are Strong Students believes that partnerships with home, school and community are essential. Cardston Elementary extend many thanks to all our collaborators.
